Bloomin' marvellous honour for Stonehaven Station 'adopters'

Bloomin' marvellous honour for Stonehaven Station 'adopters'

Monday 16 February

Two organisations who “adopted” Stonehaven railway station have been recognised by ScotRail for their community efforts.

It follows funding by Deeside Timberframe Ltd for numerous floral tubs and mounted boxes on the station platforms – and members of the Stonehaven Horizon Group tending to the plants.

Adding colour to the station earned both organisations a second place in the Best New Group Adopter category in ScotRail’s awards scheme for “Adopt a Station” initiatives.

The certificate was presented to Horizon Group chairman Allan Cairnduff at a lunch in Glasgow.

Allan, whose voluntary group aims to foster civic pride in Stonehaven, was delighted at the award - especially because Adopt a Station is designed to encourage local involvement and put stations at the heart of communities.

He said: “This award is very special to all of us at the Horizon Group.

“Thanks to the funding of our fellow ‘adopters’ Deeside Timberframe, people using Stonehaven Station will see flowers bloom for years to come .”

John Yellowlees, ScotRail’s external relations manager, added: “ScotRail’s Adopt a Station scheme is about putting stations at the heart of their communities.

“We are delighted that so many individuals and groups like the Stonehaven Horizon Group and Deeside Timberframe are making a real difference to enhancing the overall appearance with colourful floral displays.”

Since launched in September 2005 the Adopt a Station scheme has gone from strength to strength - with 71 stations now benefitting from floral displays maintained by volunteers.  Other initiatives include spectacular murals, coffee shops, a charity bookshop, a toy library and community meeting rooms.
