CONNECTING THE HIGHLANDS

Monday 13 July 2009

ScotRail is going the extra mile to help visitors enjoy the spectacular scenery of the Scottish Highlands without a car.

A new leaflet now available at stations contains a map of rail routes plus connecting bus and ferry services north and west of Inverness.

The "Connecting the Highlands" leaflet summarises services on the Kyle and Far North Lines and connecting bus routes linking railway termini with places off the rail network, ranging from Portree and Uig in Skye to Ullapool, Lochinver and Kinlochbervie in Sutherland, or Tongue and John o' Groats in Caithness.   A helpful guide to taking cycles on trains is provided, and ferry routes are clearly detailed.

The leaflet has been produced with the assistance of HITRANS and Highland Council.

ScotRail managing director Steve Montgomery said: "Our routes to Kyle of Lochalsh and the Far North of Scotland are among the most spectacular in the world.  There are even more options for exploring the Highlands if you also use the bus and ferry network. This leaflet reveals how you can combine bus and train travel to produce the perfect trip."
