Fife man takes on charity cycling challenge

Tuesday 28 July 2009

A Fife man is set to cycle from London to Paris for charity.

And even before turning a wheel, Gordon Allan has beaten the fundraising target.

Gordon, who lives in Kirkcaldy and works at ScotRail’s Edinburgh Haymarket Depot, is taking part in the five-day London to Paris Cycling Challenge next month in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

The 43-year-old father of two has received a £1000 donation towards his efforts from FirstGroup, parent company of ScotRail.

Gordon said: “The target set for everyone taking part in the fundraising is £1350 – and so far I’ve managed to raise £2400, with the FirstGroup donation getting me off to a great start.”

He added: “The event is a huge challenge, but it’s worth doing for a good cause.”

Gordon, an engineer, will cycle the gruelling 302 miles over five days from 19 August – starting from London to Dover and then from Callais to the challenge end at the Eiffel Tower.  He will travel home to Fife afterwards – by train of course.

Avril Gill, Marketing Manager, Group Brand at FirstGroup, said: “We wish Gordon all the best with the challenge.  We’re always on the look-out for opportunities to help at a local level – especially where there is an employee connection.  This is a perfect example of doing just that.”
