Make your connections go smoothly...

Many of the rail journeys referred to in this part of our website involve using another mode of transport to complete your journey - for example if you are travelling from Glasgow to Brodick you would normally go by train from Glasgow to Ardrossan then complete your journey by ferry. This is a hassle-free process completed by many passengers across our network every day. If you do have problems, ScotRail and other public transport operators will try to help - however, you also have a responsibility to help ensure your journey runs as smoothly as possible.

We ask that you take care when planning your journey, and to be realistic about how much time you leave to catch connections. Where connecting services operate frequently you can often leave quite short connectional margins - for example if you are travelling on the frequent rail link bus between Leuchars and St Andrews. Other services, particularly some connecting ferry routes, operate very infrequently and you should plan your journey carefully to ensure you leave enough time, plus a contingency margin, just in case you encounter any problems en route.

In all cases, you should leave extra time if you're planning to catch the last connecting service of the day, and you should always check to make sure there have been no last minute schedule changes - for example ferry services can be disrupted by severe weather which may not always be obvious away from the coast, and rail services can be ammended at weekends and public holidays for engineering work.
