Shortlist announced for First ScotRail Press Photography Awards 2008

Monday 2 March 2009

The shortlist for the prestigious First ScotRail Press Photography Awards is announced today (Monday 2 March).

From a record 3100 images submitted across 14 categories, 42 talented photographers and nine newspapers and/or magazines have been shortlisted by a judging panel chaired by Ken Lennox, former picture editor of The Sun.

Vying for the top award of Photographer of the Year are entries from The Scotsman, Getty Images and The Press Association. Last year’s winner, Ian Rutherford of The Scotsman is in the running to secure the award for a record fifth time.

The Scotsman and sister newspapers Scotland on Sunday and Edinburgh Evening News have achieved an impressive 13 shortlisted entries - eight for The Scotsman, including in the Magazine / Supplement of the Year; four for SoS, and one for the News.  Ian Rutherford is shortlisted in four categories; Jane Barlow three times, Phil Wilkinson twice, and Robert Perry in one category.

The Herald, Sunday Herald and Glasgow Evening Times also feature strongly with seven shortlisted entries including the Newspaper and Magazine/Supplement categories; Picture Essay of the Year (Marc Turner), Features (Julie Howden), and Celebrity Picture of the Year (Jamie Simpson).

Sunday Times Scotland is shortlisted with the Sunday Herald, Daily Record and Scotland on Sunday in the Newspaper of the Year category while Scottish Field, The Herald Magazine and Scotsman Magazine are among the short-list in the Magazine / Supplement of the Year.

Agencies again feature strongly, with a total of eight shortlisted entries.  The Press Association is represented in four by David Cheskin and Andrew Milligan; Getty Images in two by Alexandria-based Jeff Mitchell and Reuters by David Moir in the Open category.

In the four-strong Celebrity shortlist, Lesley Martin and Crawford Brown of the Daily Record are competing against David Cheskin of the Press Association and Jamie Simpson of the Evening Times. Amy Winehouse, Sir Sean Connery and Gail Porter are among the celebrity images featured.

In the Local Photographer of the Year category, freelancers Brian Averell of Helensburgh and Ian Jacobs of Edinburgh join Robin Bryden of the Dumfries and Galloway Standard and Gordon Fraser of the East Lothian News on the shortlist.

Glasgow Metropolitan College students Eve Conroy and Claire Taylor are competing with Artur Drazkowski of Clydebank College and Jim Carroll of Stevenson College in Edinburgh for the Student Photographer of the Year award.

From today, the public can vote online at www.scottishppa.com to decide the winner of the 12 shortlisted images in the Open category.  There’s strong representation from the freelance community in a shortlist that also includes David Moir for Reuters and Brian Anderson for News of the World.

In the Employee Photographer of the Year award, a special category for staff of ScotRail, photographers from Banffshire, Lossiemouth, Edinburgh, Johnstone and Culloden have made the shortlist.

The winners will be announced on 26 March at an awards ceremony in Glasgow where as an additional supporter of the Student and Young Photographer categories, Nikon (www.nikon.co.uk) will provide those winners with a fabulous camera.

Ken Lennox, chairman of the judges, is impressed by the standard of entries: “The judging panel has once again had the opportunity to view and shortlist some truly outstanding images across categories that reflect the rich tapestry of Scottish life.

“The images submitted for the Features category were inventive, fun and well executed while some shots in the Sport categories raised a smile and portrayed plenty of drama.

“The Student category is also very strong. Clearly, entrants have worked extremely hard to pull together their submissions. Overall, entries have once again been of a very high standard, reflecting Scotland’s rich seam of photographic talent.”

Steve Montgomery, ScotRail’s acting managing director, added:  “It’s superb the First ScotRail Press Photography Awards have attracted a record number of high quality entries and I wish those shortlisted the very best of luck for the awards."
