What we're doing

We all have a responsibility, both at corporate level and as individuals, to reduce the effect we have on the environment around us.

ScotRail’s dedicated, formal environmental policy is pledged to help Scotland reduce its carbon footprint by encouraging the increased use of rail travel over less fuel efficient transport modes. We also seek to minimise the environmental impact of our business through the active participation of all staff in the best use of our physical resources.

ScotRail’s targets

By April 2008, reduce CO2 emissions by 5% compared with 2005/06 levels
By April 2012, reduce CO2 emissions by 10% compared with 2005/06 levels
By April 2020, reduce CO2 emissions by 20% compared with 2005/06 levels.

  1. We have appointed an Environmental Improvement Manager and have initiatives in place to help us achieve these targets:
  2. Fitting automated lighting controls at ScotRail’s Head Office in Glasgow to ensure that lights are turned off when not required. The lighting features high frequency luminaires with low energy lamps;
  3. Recycling waste paper, plastic bottles, aluminium cans - and crushing oil filters for recycling;
Promoting Green Travel Plans by encouraging cycling;
  4. Recycling litter collected from trains.

We have already reduced our electricity and gas usage and our fleet fuel efficiency is improving.

ScotRail works closely with Carbon Trust, an independent company funded by Government to help the UK move to a low carbon economy.
