Following the news that Glasgow is to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games, the world’s leading transport company FirstGroup revealed today that it hopes to be the Games’ official transport partner in 2014. As a Major Supporter of Glasgow’s bid, Scotland-based First has been a key player in the 2014 bid. Several First ScotRail trains and many of its buses throughout the country feature Scottish athletes, helping raise awareness and support of the bid. First also supplied coaches to transport the VIPs and delegates who visited Glasgow as part of their assessment.
In addition, First is supporting many young athletes in their quest to reach the 2014 Games. Mary Grant, managing director of First ScotRail said: “Following the success of First’s partnership with the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, we are very keen to continue our association and support of the Games. “Having supported Glasgow’s bid with such enthusiasm, First is in a very strong position to be the official transport provider for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. It has been wonderful to have been a major supporter of the bid – going forward, I am very hopeful that First will continue to be at the heart of Glasgow 2014.” She added: “It is quite simply tremendous that Glasgow has fended off the competition and triumphed in the battle to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Key to the success was the extraordinary effort and determination of the bid team in general and in particular their exceptionally successful strategy in uniting sport, business and most importantly, the public, behind the bid. I am very much looking forward to 2014 – it is a great opportunity to demonstrate to the world what a fantastic country Scotland is.”
