Peter Williams, First ScotRail’s commercial director, said of the new online service: “This is a welcome development which will be popular with the many overseas visitors who use our services. Above all, it makes it easier to plan their journeys in advance. We have also increased the number of collection points across our network to more than 100, including self-service ticket vending machines.”

Denise Hill, head of international marketing for VisitScotland, the national tourism organisation, said: “The train is a popular mode of transport for our overseas visitors. It is great they can now book their rail travel easily on the internet before arriving in Scotland.

“We are lucky to have some incredibly stunning rail journeys in Scotland which give our international visitors access to fantastic destinations from our vibrant cities to some of our most tranquil rural areas. International visitors tend to stay for a week or more in Scotland and like to travel around to experience as much as they can and the train is a great way for them to do that.”

The online booking option enhances current arrangements. Bookings from abroad are also available by telephoning First ScotRail’s overseas sales department (+441 752 675670).
