Kilmarnock station wins top award
The ScotRail Alliance has announced that Kilmarnock station has scooped a top community award.
The refurbished underpass at Kilmarnock station, which was completed in December 2016, was nominated for the ‘Community Art Schemes (Permanent Projects)’ category at the Community Rail Awards 2017.
Organised by the Association of Community Rail Partnerships (ACoRP), the awards ceremony was hosted by East Midlands Trains at The Roundhouse, Derby, on Thursday 5 October 2017.
Multi-award winning Glasgow-based art organisation WAVEparticle was commissioned by the ScotRail Alliance and the Ayrshire Roads Alliance to create the unique work, which commemorates the history of the Ayrshire town. The WAVEparticle team held workshops in the station and in nearby schools, as well as in the recently-restored station buildings.
The eye-catching hexagonal design features stories and pictures submitted by local residents, and captures the town’s proud history as a hub of industry, as well as more personal memories from residents, past and present.
The underpass also features panels designed with creative input from residents, organisations, pupils and students from the town, as well as 10 display boxes.
ScotRail Alliance Head of Economic Development James Ledgerwood said:
“It’s fantastic to see the stunning work at Kilmarnock station receive this accolade.
“It was a real community project. People of all ages and backgrounds got involved and created something that truly reflects the town’s great heritage and prosperous future.”
