New class 385 electric train for Glasgow Central routes

ScotRail has taken another step to provide better services for customers, with the introduction of the latest brand-new Hitachi class 385 electric train to its routes south of Glasgow.

Customers travelling on the Cathcart Circle and Central to Newton routes are now able to experience the new three-carriage train after it was introduced to weekday morning peak services from today (Monday 18 February).

This introduction means class 385s are now operating on five separate routes, with the trains already in customer service between Edinburgh and Glasgow, the Stirling – Dunblane – Alloa route, and North Berwick. It also brings the number of the trains operating across the routes to 31.

The trains are part of ScotRail’s £475 million rolling stock investment, following the £858 million electrification of the line between Edinburgh and Glasgow by Network Rail.

It’s the latest in a range of improvements to services throughout the country, with more than 2,400 weekday passenger trains delivering 605,000 seats for customers. Further class 385 trains are due to be introduced on routes throughout the country in the coming months.

ScotRail Chief Operating Officer Angus Thom said:

“I am delighted that we are able to introduce another brand-new Hitachi class 385 train, this time leaving from Glasgow Central. We know that our customers will really notice the difference from today.

“The introduction of these trains are benefiting customers all across the country, as they allow us to move existing trains on this route out across the network. This is helping us to deliver faster journeys, more seats, and better services for our customers.”
