Events to enjoy from home this December

Last updated: Friday, 8 March 2024

This December, Christmas festivities may look a little different. But that doesn't mean you need to scrimp on the fun.

There are lots of lovely virtual events taking place that can be enjoyed from the comfort and cosiness of your sofa.

Here are a few of our favourites:

Summerhall's Christmas Market

Summerhall Christmas market

Edinburgh's Summerhall becomes the city's holly jolly virtual hub this Christmas season as their popular festive market heads online, featuring 60+ handpicked artisans and with 100% of profits going to the designers themselves.

Spanning everything from art, textiles and homeware to plants, clothing and ceramics, stallholders include preserved delights from Edinburgh Fermentarium, handmade jewellery from Maeberry Jewellery, luxurious suds from soap makers Dook, and much more. A lovely way to buy your Christmas gifts while supporting local makers.

The McDougalls: Virtual Christmas Party

McDougalls Christmas party

The McDougalls are broadcasting festive fun straight into our homes this year with their Virtual Christmas Party. Max, Auntie Aggie and Morag the Rabbit will be decking the halls and hosting plenty of games, songs, dances and musical mayhem for the whole family to enjoy. Expect interactive sing-a-longs of classics like 'Jingle Bells', 'Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes' and 'The Hokey Cokey', and tune in to find out whether the big man in red himself will show up to the party.

Shows take place at 1pm and 3pm on Saturday 19, Sunday 20 Dec and Thursday 24 Dec.

Shine On Documentary

Shine On at Dundee Rep

Screening of the documentary Shine On, which centres upon Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre in the two-month run-up to Christmas 2020. The documentary follows the companies as they navigate the shifting sands of COVID-19 lockdown regulations and transform their practices in response to new unprecedented circumstances -- all the while producing a multi-dimensional Christmas production to bring light and joy into the lives of Dundonians and people everywhere.

Advent

Even though venues remain shuttered and people are separated from many of their loved ones this winter, Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre stage 24 digital festive vignettes to light up the Christmas season. Each special performance will be broadcast across their social media platforms, or audiences can sign up to have them sent straight into their email inboxes.

Takes place between Tuesday 1 and Thursday 24 Dec at www.dundeerep.co.uk
