Christmas light switch on dates

There’s something so magical about cold, dark evenings filled with mesmerising Christmas lights.

Seeing Scotland’s towns and cities all lit up is enough to melt the coldest of hearts and one of the big events on any city’s Christmas calendar is the Christmas light switch on.

Edinburgh Christmas Edinburgh

When: Sunday 17 November 2019

This year’s Christmas Light switch on moves from the New Town across to the Royal Mile. The ‘Night Light’ will be hosted by Arlene Stewart from Forth One and will feature lots of brilliant performances. There will be music from the Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh Choir, the Edinburgh singing group for children, Intercultural Youth Scotland and Rock Choir Live.

Two screens will be dotted down the Royal Mile so nobody misses out on the event.

The Christmas light switch on has been in such high demand over the past few years that again, this year tickets were allocated by ballot. If you were lucky enough to get your mitten-clad hands on tickets, have a brilliant time! If you didn’t get tickets, you can enjoy the beautiful lights any other time you fancy.


When: Sunday 17 November 2019

Santa and his reindeer begin the celebrations with a parade setting off through Corn Exchange and finishing up at the Albert Halls where you can see them until 3:15pm. There will be lots of music taking place across the centre with performances from Funbox, Alix Muir and the Big Fun Orchestra.

Dundee City Square Christmas Light Switch OnDundee

When: Friday 15 November 2019

From 4pm the city centre will be filled with entertainment, music and activities before the big switch on at 6:45pm.


When: Saturday 16 November 2019

The whole city centre will be transformed for a day of festive celebrations. Kicking off at midday with entertainment, rides for the kids, reindeer and of course, Santa. After the big light switch on, the day will be rounded off with an impressive firework display over the River Tay.

Christmas in Aberdeen kicks off with the Charlie House Santa Fun Run down Union Street. The Christmas parade then follows, led this year by the Up Helly Aa Vikings from Shetland in a dramatic Fire and Ice themed parade. Santa will be sure to make an appearance too. All rounded off with the Light Switch on at 5:30pm.
