A Doc, A Dinner, A Drink: Night Mail / Drifters

Join us as we celebrate the 125 birthday of the ‘father of documentary’, John Grierson, with a documentary double bill.

Narrated by Grierson, Night Mail, Harry Watt and Basil Wright's study of the down postal express stands as a beacon for John Grierson's original purpose for documentary - to make the working man the hero of the screen.

Drifters (1929), widely regarded the film that initiated the documentary movement in Britain, is Grierson’s study of the lives of North Sea herring fishermen and will be joined by a live piano accompaniment by Forrester Pyke.
