Your journey begins at Edinburgh Waverley and you'll travel along the stunning new Borders Railway to Galashiels. Here Rabbie’s will meet you off the train and transport you into the heart of Borders country on one of three tailored tours.

Explore Sir Walter Scott country, take in the best of the Borders, or sample some of the high quality local produce.

The tour

Discover the beautiful countryside and folklore that inspired the works of Sir Walter Scott – one of Scotland’s greatest writers. From stunning views to fascinating historic sights this tour will give you a real feel for life in the wonderful Scottish Borders.

Sir Walter Scott is one of Scotland’s greatest writers and many of his works were inspired by the history and landscapes of the Borders region. This tour discovers some of the most important places in Scott’s life and provides a perfect introduction to this
fascinating area.

The journey starts with Abbotsford, the family home Scott built on the banks of the River Tweed, then continues through Selkirk, where he was the local sheriff-depute. From here you will cross the Tweed Valley to remote Smailholm Tower where Scott played as a child. The final stop will be at the famous Scott’s View, looking out over the Eildon Hills.

Along the way there will be opportunities to sample local Borders produce, visit a working textile mill, do a bit of shopping and of course take lots of photos of beautiful Borders scenery.

The tour

The Borders have everything a visitor would expect from Scotland – pretty villages, ancient castles, historic towns, wonderful natural scenery and great food and drink. This tour samples them all and definitely showcases the best of the Borders!

Starting from Galashiels the tour travels first to the famous Scott’s View for a panoramic outlook across the area. Nearby is the original Wallace Monument, an impressive statue of William Wallace sitting high above the surrounding countryside. From here it’s a short drive to Kelso with its ruined abbey, impressive town square and plenty of options for a relaxed lunch.

In the afternoon you will visit the Royal Burgh of Jedburgh, a thriving market town full of historic sites and shopping opportunities. The last stop of the day will be at the “Born in the Borders” craft brewery, café and shop situated in a beautiful location above the River Teviot.

The tour

The Borders is developing a reputation for high quality local produce – from locally raised beef to craft brewed beer. This is a tour for those interested in quality food and drink and also the land on which they are produced.

From Galashiels the tour takes a scenic route via Scott’s View and the Eildon Hills to “Born in the Borders”. This recent addition to the Borders food scene showcases locally sourced produce in their café, and their microbrewery makes beer from barley grown in the nearby fields. There will be plenty of opportunities to sample the results and browse their deli and gift shop.

From here it’s a short distance to the historic Royal Burgh of Jedburgh, a thriving market town full of historic sites and fascinating independent shops.

The route then leads through rolling Borders farmland, source of so much of the region’s fine food and drink, before reaching Kelso.Here you can browse the shops surrounding the cobbled market square, wander along the River Tweed or explore the ruined abbey. With a selection of restaurants, cafes and pubs including Scotland’s first craft beer “micropub” this is an ideal place for dinner. And there’s no need to worry about who is driving!

With the purchase of just one ticket, you will leave from Edinburgh Waverley and travel along the Borders Railway to Galashiels. Rabbie’s will meet you off the train and transport you into the heart of Borders country on one of our three tailored tours.

Borders tours depart from Galashiels' Transport Interchange. The Interchange building is located directly across the road from the railway station and is well sign posted.

If the connecting train from Edinburgh Waverley (as published in each itinerary) is delayed or cancelled, we will delay the start of the tour. If all train services on the Borders Railway are cancelled, the tour will not be able to run and your payment will be refunded.

Children over 5 years old are welcome on the Borders tours.

We want you to enjoy the best of the Borders as much as possible, and we believe the best way to do this is to get you off the bus as often as we can. We include a mixture of photo stops, comfort stops and some walking on each tour.

It is entirely up to you whether you visit the attractions on your Borders tour. Your Rabbie's driver/guide will be able to recommend alternatives and let you know what time the tour departs again.

The tours are designed to allow time off the bus to explore the Borders with nature walks, attraction visits and shopping. We recommend you bring suitable outdoor clothing (including waterproofs) and footwear for your Borders tour.

It's not necessary to bring your own lunch on the Borders tours, but you can if you wish. We will stop in small towns or villages where you can choose where you eat, or at rural family-run establishments where there is a choice to suit all budgets. These places are always chosen for their charm and character to give you a taste of fabulous hospitality.

  • Tour departures are timed to connect with the ScotRail service from Edinburgh Waverley published on each tour itinerary. They will take into account delays/cancellations to this service (Note: We are unable to delay a tour if you miss your train or any connections)
  • Tour transport is an air-conditioned Mercedes mini-coach and includes the services of a professional Rabbie’s driver/guide
  • Entrance fees to visitor attractions, meals and refreshments are NOT included in the tour price
  • Your tour departure is guaranteed except due to circumstances outside our control
  • Refunds are at Rabbie's discretion for cancellations less than 72 hours before the start of the tour
  • Full refunds will be given if the tour is cancelled by Rabbie's and/or if all ScotRail train services on the Borders Railway are cancelled
  • Rabbie's reserve the right to alter the tour itinerary due to weather conditions or other such extenuating circumstances as they see fit
