The 150th Open

The event has now passed.

Old Course at St Andrews hosts The 150th Open from 10-17 July 2022.

We’re doing everything we can to support your travel to and from The 150th Open Championship at St Andrews, however, our temporary timetable will still be in place throughout the Championship.

This means there will be a very limited number of trains to and from Leuchars – the closest station to the course.

Space on board trains is limited, and unfortunately no rail replacement transport is available, so we urge you to plan your journey now, and to consider what alternative modes of transport are available.

It's disappointing that we are unable to provide the same level of support to the Championship as we have done in previous years, with additional services and extra carriages. We are working closely with key partners, including The R&A, Fife Council, and Transport Scotland, and will continue to play our part during this major event.

Due to the temporary timetable currently in place, we will be running a very limited number of trains to and from Leuchars, the nearest station to St Andrews, during The Open.

The timetable will see trains between Edinburgh, Dundee, and Aberdeen and Leuchars operating roughly every 60 minutes on Championship days, Thursday, 14 July to Sunday, 17 July 2022.

Space on board trains is very limited, and no rail replacement transport is available, so please plan ahead, check your entire journey, and know what alternative modes of transport are available.

The local bus network operated by Stagecoach links St Andrews to Dundee, Cupar, Glenrothes, and the villages around the East Neuk of Fife, as well as an express bus service connecting to Glasgow and Edinburgh. More information on bus services can be found via Stagecoach and Moffat and Williamson .

Additional Park and Ride facilities will be available for fans travelling to The Open by road. Spectators travelling to the Championship by car or motorcycle will be directed to The Open Park & Ride sites by Variable Messaging Signs (VMS) and specific black and yellow event signs provided by the AA. Park and Ride tickets are available on The Open website .

If you travel by rail, please be aware that there will be long queues at stations, with waiting times of more than one hour.

We will have extra staff at stations to help you, and please remember that the carrying and consumption of alcohol is prohibited on ScotRail trains and in ScotRail stations.

If you've already purchased a rail ticket to Leuchars for The Open, and no longer wish to travel due to our temporary timetable being in place, you are able to request a full refund for your rail ticket and the standard administration fee of £10 will be waived.

Due to queueing systems in place at key stations between Edinburgh Waverley and Aberdeen, seat reservations will be removed from all ScotRail reservable services on this line of route from Tuesday, 12 July until Sunday, 17 July.

You can book assistance:

There are three things you can do to make sure your travelling experience to The Open goes as smoothly as possible:

  • Buy your train tickets in advance
  • Leave plenty of time for your journey as queueing systems will be in place at key stations. You may have to queue for more than one hour at key stations, including, Leuchars, Dundee, Aberdeen, Glasgow Queen Street, Edinburgh Waverley, and Haymarket.
  • Listen to station staff – they’re there to help you!

In order to provide enough trains to transport golf fans to this exciting event, we’ll be making some changes to some local services from Thursday 14 until Sunday 17 July.

More information on specific changes will be published here before the event but, as a general rule, we advise you to check your journey before travelling in order to be sure of your travel options.

Amended train times may result in slightly longer journeys, so please leave plenty of time if you’re planning to catch an onward connection.

We're using Leuchars station car park as a spectator queuing area during busy times. The car park will be closed to the public from midnight on Friday, 8 July.

All vehicles should be removed from Leuchars station car park before midnight on Friday, 8 July. Any vehicle parked in the car park after this time will be removed in accordance with Railway Byelaw 14(5) of the Transport Act 2000. The vehicle’s owner will be solely responsible for the full cost of retrieval.
