How Smart Plus works
Pay for your train travel without buying a ticket! Add credit to your Smart Plus account, tap in at your departure station and tap out when you reach your destination. The cost of your journey will be deducted from the money you added to your card. Simple.
Already have a ScotRail Smartcard? Travel smarter in three simple steps:
- Step 1: Register for our Smart Plus pilot
- Step 2: Set up a payment card and add credit to your Smart Plus account online
- Step 3: Tap in and tap out every time you travel within the pilot zone* and we'll automatically charge you the cheapest price for your journey
*The Smart Plus pilot zone includes travel between Glasgow Central, Cathcart, Neilston, Newton and intermediate stations.
The benefits of Smart Plus
No need to queue for tickets - add credit to your Smart Plus account online then tap to travel. Just tap your Smartcard at the ticket gates or a platform validator, wait for the beep and you’re done. At the end of your journey, do the same again.
Tap in and out every time you travel and we'll automatically charge you the cheapest price for your journey. Travel regularly on the same route? We'll even cap your fares so you never pay more than a Weekly Season Ticket (based on travel between Monday and Sunday).
Flexibility and freedom
Travel at any time of day, as much as you like within the pilot zone. Set your account to Auto Top Up when your balance is low and you'll never run out of credit.
