Check and Collect

Load tickets onto your Smartcard using the ScotRail App.

With the latest version of the ScotRail App, you can load tickets you’ve bought online onto your Smartcard before you travel. You can also check what tickets are already loaded, giving you peace of mind when you travel.

Check and collect functionality is available on NFC-enabled Android devices, and is now available for iPhones too.

Check and Collect on Android

To use check and collect functionality on Android, you’ll need an NFC-enabled device and the latest version of the ScotRail app. Follow these three simple steps to check and collect:

  1. Open the ScotRail app and tap the ‘+’ button – select ‘Smartcard’ from the pop-up menu
  2. Hold your Smartcard against the NFC zone on your phone – if NFC is off, you’ll be prompted to switch it on
  3. Tap the ‘Check for new tickets/products’ button – you’ll need an internet connection when you do this

Any new Smartcard purchases will appear on screen and are now ready to use. You can also see any existing tickets, and your last tap in/out.

If NFC is switched on, you can also launch the ScotRail app by holding your Smartcard against the NFC zone on your phone.

Check and Collect on iPhone

We recently launched check and collect functionality for iPhone users. You’ll need an iPhone 7 or later, running iOS 13 or later and the latest version of the ScotRail app. Follow these two simple steps to check and collect:

  1. Open the ScotRail app and tap ‘Smartcard’ in the main menu – the main menu is located at the top left of the home screen
  2. Hold your Smartcard near your iPhone – hold your card against the NFC zone, usually on the back of your iPhone near the camera

Any new Smartcard purchases will appear on screen and are now ready to use. You can also see any existing tickets, and your last tap in/out.

What is NFC?

NFC (Near-Field Communication) lets two electronic devices communicate when they are close to each other – in this instance your phone and your Smartcard.

Most new Android smartphones have the technology built in, but needs to be switched on (You will be prompted to switch on NFC when you hold your Smartcard against your device).

The latest iPhones (iPhone 7 and above) can now read NFC tags. To use Check and Collect functionality you'll need and iPhone 7 or later running iOS 13 or later. NFC on iPhone works automatically so need to switch it on.

I have the relevant Android/iPhone device but can't load my Smart tickets

Here are a few things to check:

  • Do you have the latest version of the ScotRail app?
Open your App Store and check for updates.
  • Is NFC switched on?
On Android devices, you should be prompted to switch on NFC when you hold your Smartcard against the phone – or check in the phone settings. NFC is automatically enabled on iPhones.
  • Are you holding your Smartcard to the NFC zone on your phone?
The NFC zone is the part of your phone where the NFC chip is located. It’s usually the back cover of your phone, but it could also be the screen. Try holding your Smartcard flat against the back of your phone first. On iPhone, the NFC zone is usually on the back of your device near the camera.
  • Is your phone in a case?
Remove the case and try again.
  • It's still not working, what else can you do?
NFC technology is relatively new and quality can vary depending upon the manufacturer and even the device type.
