Between 2 October 2023 and 28 June 2024, customers can travel at any time of the day on Off-Peak tickets. This means that for most customers, it may be cheaper for you to purchase a ticket each day you travel. Got a Smartcard? Looking for a flexible way to travel? Flexipass is the perfect solution if you need to travel the same route just once or twice a week. With a Flexipass, you can make 10 single journeys or 5 return journeys on the same route within 60 days. As the name suggests, it’s the most flexible way to travel by train!

Simply load your Flexipass on to a Smartcard and tap in at the beginning of your journey, and tap out when you reach your destination.

With a Flexipass, there are no time restrictions. This means you can travel at any time of day, seven days a week. You just need to use your 10 journeys within a 60-day period.

Flexipass tickets are valid on all ScotRail, CrossCountry, and TransPennine Express services within Scotland. This includes over 1,350 journeys across 28 ScotRail routes. Seat reservations are not available with a Flexipass, and they are non-refundable and non-transferable meaning you cannot offer your Flexipass to someone else. Most Railcard and child discounts are exempt from using with Flexipass, with the exception of Highland Railcards. If you lose your Smartcard, we’ll send you a free replacement Smartcard and load any unused journeys from your lost card straight onto the new one.

Your Flexipass is protected by our Delay Repay guarantee, meaning you can claim compensation if your journey is delayed by 30 minutes or more. Read our full Delay Repay guarantee and relevant terms & conditions for more information.

Yes. Flexipass tickets are exclusive to Smartcard. You can apply for a free Smartcard on the ScotRail website and have it delivered direct to your home. Flexipass tickets do not require you to supply a photo.

Flexipass tickets can be bought on the ScotRail website, on our app, or at any ScotRail ticket office or vending machine.

A Flexipass is usually valid from the date you buy your ticket, but you can choose to start it from a future date if you wish.

Flexipass tickets are valid on ScotRail, CrossCountry, and TransPennine Express services within Scotland. They are available on over 1,350 journeys, across 28 ScotRail routes.

You can use it to travel in either direction on a route of your choice, on any day of the week and at any time. Simply tap in and tap out at a ticket gate or platform validator at the start and end of every journey.

A Flexipass cannot be used to join or depart at intermediate stations, unless your route involves a change of train at that point.

Every time you use one of your ten flexible journeys, you must tap in and out at the start and end of every trip.

Why tap in and out? You must have a valid ticket to travel with us and that requires you to tap in and tap out at the beginning and end of every trip.

If you start or end your journey at a gated station, the gate will tap you in/out when you present your Smartcard at the card reader.

If you start or end your journey at an ungated station, you will need to present your Smartcard at one of the platform validators at your origin/destination station to start or complete your journey.

If you don’t tap in and out, you may be charged an additional fare.

Tapping in and out every time will also avoid any delays in updating the information card/journey usage when checking your Smartcard using the ScotRail app.

Download the free ScotRail App, and head to the "My Tickets" section. There, you'll easily be able to check how many Flexipass journeys you have left, and when they expire (60 days from start date). Just follow the same steps for loading your ticket:

  1. Open the ScotRail App and tap ‘My Tickets’ at the bottom of the screen
  2. Tap the round red button and scan your Smartcard by simply hold your Smartcard against the back of your phone for a few seconds. The details of your loaded tickets will appear on screen

Tickets are not transferable and it is not possible to get a refund for a Flexipass, even if you don’t use all of your journeys before the expiry date.

Please note, for the duration of the Off-Peak fares all day long trial, which runs between 2 October 2023 and 31 March 2024, full or partial refunds will be available for Flexipass tickets and the £10 standard refund fee is waived. You can submit a refund request using our online refund request form. This can currently take up to 28 working days to process due to the high volume of refunds we are receiving.

With a Smartcard, you can buy online or through the ScotRail app so that when you arrive at the station you can head straight to the ticket gates. As Smartcards are paperless, you'll be contributing to making travel greener, too!
