Keeping you moving during Storm Ciara

Last updated: Sunday, 9 February 2020

We’re preparing Scotland’s Railway for Storm Ciara, with extreme wind, rain and snow forecasted across Scotland until Tuesday, 11 February.

Met Office yellow weather warnings are in place from 1200 on Saturday, 8 February until 1200 on Tuesday, 11 February. Given the forecast, we expect to see some disruption across the network, so please plan ahead and consider the weather forecast in your area before travelling.

Our Network Rail colleagues are out checking the network, to make sure it’s in the best shape possible. If you live near the railway, you can help us keep the network open by securing loose items like garden furniture, sheds or trampolines.

Our Integrated Control team in Glasgow monitors weather stations right across Scotland’s Railway in real-time. This means we can make decisions based on the actual conditions, and we will only suspend services where absolutely necessary – to keep you safe.

Changes to services

Glasgow Central - Largs / Ardrossan

We’re expect to see some disruption to these services on Saturday and Sunday around high-tide. Network Rail will have teams on standby there monitoring the sea conditions. When waves crash over the sea wall, it can cause damage to the overhead wires.

High tide is expected at 0009 on Sunday morning, and again at 1200. Services may be impacted for a couple of hours either side of this, we will run services if it is safe to do so. Replacement transport is on hand, just in case.

Glasgow Queen Street - Helensburgh

Given the severity of the weather conditions this line will remain closed until end of service today (Sunday 9 Feb).

West Highland Line & Inverness - Kyle of Lochalsh

Due to the extreme (80+ mph) winds that have been forecast affecting the West Highland and Kyle lines, services will be suspended from early afternoon on Sunday, 9 February, on both routes. Replacement transport will only be in place if it is safe for buses to run.

We’ve made these difficult decisions to keep our customers and staff safe, and to allow trains to stable safely before the worst of the weather hits.

The routes will be inspected using locomotives before they reopen for passenger services, so please bear with us while this vital work is carried out.
