The small print

Club 50 is ScotRail’s exclusive club for people 50 or over and officially launched on 14 September 2015. Membership costs £15 per person for a year.

As a member you’ll get a year-round 20% discount on Off-Peak and Advance tickets purchased online (10% discount when purchased at a staffed station or via Telesales). You’ll benefit from exclusive flat fare ticket offers twice a year and other member offers.

Joining Club 50 is quick and easy - all you need to complete the online application form is an email address and a recent (passport quality) photo. You can upload an existing photo or take a new one as part of the sign up process. Membership costs £15 per person for a year.

Club 50 requires online sign up because membership is based on the issue of a Smartcard, and as a business we have committed to the Scottish Government that we will roll out smartcard ticket options as quickly as possible. Having a smartcard means that, in future, it will be possible to 'load' your Club 50 tickets onto your smartcard.

Our advice to those who wish to go ahead, but are unsure of how to proceed, is to ask for help from friends or relatives. Public libraries may also be able to assist in getting you online. Remember, you only have to do this once - once signed up, Club 50 customers can continue to buy tickets at stations if they prefer.

Because Club 50 requires an online account, we need an email address for each member. This serves as the username for the account.

There are many great free email service providers on the internet and we urge customers to check them out or speak to your Internet Service Provider for help.

Unfortunately not. To allow us to offer the best deals and discounts and to keep your personal information secure, Club 50 requires online registration and an email address. This cannot be supported at a station or by post.

You can’t use your Club 50 membership before your 50th birthday so you should wait until you turn 50 to join. You can access the benefits straight away and don’t need to wait until your membership Smartcard arrives. You’ll be required to carry proof of age (50 or over) when travelling on a Club 50 ticket.

Customers whose 50th birthday was before 30th September 2015, were able to join Club 50 during the introductory period. However they couldn’t travel on the introductory fare until they were 50.

As a Club 50 member you receive:

  • Exclusive flat fare rail offers twice a year
  • A year-round 20% discount on Off-Peak and Advance tickets, between any two stations in Scotland, when purchased online
  • A year-round 10% discount on Off-Peak and Advance tickets, between any two stations in Scotland, when purchased at stations or via Telesales
  • A free on-board refreshment when travelling with a Club 50 ticket on routes with catering facilities (subject to availability)
  • Offers from hand-picked partners

Club 50 cannot be used in conjunction with Railcard discounts. Further, the permanent discounts on offer for Club 50 members are not always as good as those offered by Railcards.

However, membership does also provide you with exclusive access to regular flat fare ticket offers.

Before you start using your Club 50 membership you need to load it onto your Club 50 Smartcard.

At a station

You can do this by asking a member of our team, who will download your membership onto your Club 50 Smartcard using their smartphone.

Via the ScotRail app (Android only)

You will need:

Most new Android smartphones have NFC technology built in. The Smartcard functionality doesn’t work on iPhones/iPads or Android phones without NFC

There are three simple steps:

  1. Open the ScotRail app and tap the ‘+’ button – select ‘Smartcard’ from the pop-up menu
  2. Hold your Smartcard against the NFC zone on your phone – this is usually on the back of your phone. If NFC is off, you’ll be prompted to switch it on
  3. Tap the ‘Check for new tickets/products’ button – you’ll need an internet connection when you do this

Any new Smartcard purchases – including your Club 50 membership – will appear on screen and are now ready to use.

You can buy Off-Peak, Off-Peak day, and Advance tickets with a Club 50 discount between any two stations in Scotland, where these tickets are available. Note that not all tickets are available on all routes.

  • Advance tickets: valid on the train specified on the ticket. ScotRail services only

No, Club 50 is only valid between stations in Scotland. Services to or from Carlisle, Newcastle and Berwick-upon-Tweed are not included in the offer as these stations are not in Scotland.

How to buy

  • Online (20% discount): click Buy Tickets and select CLUB 50 WEB - SCOTRAIL from the list of railcards
  • At a staffed station (10% discount): just present your Club 50 membership Smartcard or proof of membership when you buy your ticket
  • From our Telesales team (10% discount): mention your Club 50 membership when you book

When you travel on a Club 50 ticket* you can get a cold drink and a sweet treat from our first class tray.

Drink options include a still or sparkling water, or an orange juice. Plus you can choose one of the following sweet treats: flapjack, cheese bites, shortbread, chinois bun, fruit pot, Reids Oaties, fudge, or muffin.

Simply show your Club 50 Smartcard and ticket to on-board catering staff (where available) to claim.

*Offer valid on ScotRail services with catering facilities only, subject to availability. One free soft drink and one free sweet treat per member, per applicable journey. Drink and treat must be taken at the same time.

Our Flexipass ticket is brand new to Smart. Get ten single journeys for the price of nine over a one-month period on over 1,350 journey options across 28 routes in Scotland.

Enter your journey details and choose the Smartcard delivery option at checkout (where available). You’ll be asked to enter your Smartcard number.

Before you travel, tap your Smartcard on the reader on a ScotRail ticket machine, ticket gate or platform validator to load the ticket onto your card. If you have an NFC-enabled Android phone, you can also load tickets onto your Smartcard via the ScotRail app

If you buy multiple tickets, they'll be loaded onto your Smartcard in the order you bought them.

You can put ScotRail Smart tickets on ScotRail Smartcards, SPT Subway Smartcards, and GrassHOPPER cards. You can only put Season Tickets on personalised Smartcards with your name and photo printed on the card.

You can buy SPT Subway tickets and SPT Pay As You Go credit for your ScotRail Smartcard at SPT Subway ticket machines and Subway station ticket offices.

At ticket machines, just put your card in the reader and follow the instructions. The ticket will be added to your Smartcard straight away.

You can buy GrassHOPPER bus tickets for your ScotRail Smartcard from the driver on board participating bus services.

Log into My ScotRail to see details of your ScotRail tickets on your ScotRail Smartcard. Details are updated overnight so tickets you buy today will be shown in your online account tomorrow.

You can also check details of your ScotRail tickets at our ticket machines.

ScotRail tickets

You can buy certain ScotRail tickets for your ScotRail Smartcard at our ticket machines. They’ll be loaded onto your card immediately and will appear in your My ScotRail account the next day.

SPT tickets and credit

You can buy SPT Subway tickets for your ScotRail Smartcard at SPT Subway ticket machines but these won’t appear in your My ScotRail account.

Note: You can’t buy ScotRail tickets for your SPT Subway Smartcard at our ticket machines yet.

You can make changes and get refunds on some tickets, with an administration fee.

Tickets on SPT Subway Smartcards

It can take a couple of seconds for your Smartcard to validate on the target area. If the problem continues, let one of the ScotRail team know and continue on your journey. If the problem continues, call our Smartcard team on 0344 811 0141.

If you’re travelling with an SPT Subway or GrassHOPPER Smartcard, hand your card to a member of ScotRail staff and let them know there’s a ScotRail ticket on it. They can check it with their Staff App. If the problem continues, contact the card issuer:

Check these answers to common account problems.

If you have set up an account since 1 April 2015, click Login/Register to access the My ScotRail login screen and select the 'Request new password' tab. Follow the link to reset your password.

If you set up your ScotRail account BEFORE 1 April 2015, then you will need to register again. Unfortunately, due to data protection, we were not able to migrate all of your personal information during the ScotRail franchise change.

To check if you already have a ScotRail account:

  • Click Login/Register to log into My ScotRail
  • Select the 'Request new password' tab and follow the link to reset it
  • Type your email address into the Email Address field and select 'Continue'

If you receive a message saying that you don’t have an account registered with us, then you can go ahead and create a new one. If you receive a message saying we've sent you a new password, then you do have an account with us and we have sent a new password to your email address. You can change this password later in My ScotRail.

To reset your password:

  • Click Login/Register to log into My ScotRail
  • Select the 'Request new password' tab and follow the link to reset it
  • Type your email address into the Email Address field and select 'Continue'

If you have an account with us we will send a new password to your email address. You can change this password later in My ScotRail.

Our online registration form and photo upload tool is designed for - and tested on - many device types and web browsers. If you’re experiencing technical difficulties we recommend you try again using a different device or a web browser.

We have also heard that some customers have experienced issues when completing the form over a slower mobile network connection. Where possible, we recommend you use a WiFi connection.

It’s hard for us to diagnose why your mobile device may be having difficulty - if you would like to report it to us, you can visit supportdetails.com from the device you are using and send us the information that it displays.

Firstly, check your Junk, Spam and Deleted email folders. Some of emails may get picked up by more sensitive Spam filters.

If you can’t find it, don’t worry. To check your membership, and view/print your member details, just log into My ScotRail

Unfortunately, we cannot resend the membership confirmation email.

Cards are normally sent out in five working days. If you haven't received your card after this time, contact the Smartcard team on 0344 811 0141 who will be able to check the status of your application.

You can also check your postal address is correct online by logging into My ScotRail

In the meantime - don’t wait - log into My Scotrail to print out and show your membership details to start enjoying the benefits of Club 50.

There are two ways to print out your membership details. You can either do it directly from the confirmation email we sent you, or from our website.

To print from our website

  • Visit My ScotRail
  • Log in with the details you signed up with
  • You'll be taken to your My ScotRail dashboard where you'll see the list of your Smartcards
  • Click 'View details' next to your Club 50 card
  • Print the webpage from your browser

First of all, don’t panic!

If you need to make changes before your card is issued (e.g. if there's an error with your name, address or photo), please speak to our Smartcard team on 0344 811 0141 straight away. We may able to make changes before your card is sent out. If we can’t, we may need to charge a card replacement fee.

If your details have changed since you signed up, you can update your name, address, email and phone number online:

  • Log into your My ScotRail account
  • Enter your email address and password and click 'Log in' to go to your account dashboard
  • Click on 'Edit account details' to update your details
  • There’s a separate link at the bottom of this form where you can update your email and password

Please note, we won't automatically reissue your Smartcard if you change your name. Please speak to our Smartcard team if you'd like a new card. We may charge a card replacement fee for this.

If you can remember the address you used then you can log in to your account online and access all your details as normal.

You’ll need to log into My ScotRail using that address first as this is your unique username, but you can amend it online by following the link to 'Edit account details'.

If you can’t remember the email address you used, contact our Smartcard team on 0344 811 0141. They'll check the system and tell you.

If you've signed up with the wrong address, please speak to our Smartcard team straight away on 0344 811 0141. We may able to make changes before your card is sent out. If we can’t, we may need to charge a card replacement fee.

Annual Club 50 membership costs £15. You'll need to pay for your membership with a credit or debit card using our secure online payment form.

No, you must never use someone else’s debit or credit card. But they can pay on your behalf by typing their information into the payment screen.

Once you have paid, there is no need to change the information you have entered. We don’t take recurring payments and we don’t store your payment information.
