In First Class, every seat has a table, a dedicated charging point and a window blind or curtain so that you can control your space. Use the time to do whatever it is you need to do so that you arrive at your destination refreshed and ready to go.

Intercity (Class 170) - Routes between our seven cities

Class 170 First Class carriage

When onboard a Class 170, you can enjoy ...

  • A quieter carriage with either 16 or 18 seats
  • A reclining, comfortable seat

While the majority of routes between Scotland's cities are operated by HSTs, Class 170s do operate some services. You can see which services these are using the dropdowns below.

eXpress (Class 385) – Services between Edinburgh and Glasgow via Falkirk High

eXpress First Class carriage

All services that run between Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Queen Street via Falkirk High are operated by a Class 385 eXpress train. There are usually two First Class carriages on board - one at the front of the train and one at the rear.

First Class Lounge at Aberdeen station

First Class lounge at Aberdeen Station
All First Class ticket holders are welcome to use the new First Class Lounge at Aberdeen station before or after their journey. Toilets and shower facilities can be found inside, alongside plenty of space to relax while enjoying complimentary refreshments and light snacks.

The lounge is located upstairs, behind the departure boards on the main station concourse.

The opening times are:

Monday to Friday: 06:15 to 21:30
Saturday: 06:15 to 19:00
Sunday: 08:45 to 21:30

How to buy your First Class ticket

Upgrade onboard

If there are still seats available in First Class you can upgrade on board by speaking to the conductor. It costs £5 to upgrade one way on eXpress services, and £15 one way on intercity services.

Use it on

Any ScotRail routes with First Class accommodation. First Class Anytime Day tickets are only available on Edinburgh to Glasgow routes with First Class accommodation.

When it's valid

  • With a First Class Anytime Single, outward travel is valid for two days from the date shown on your outward ticket.
  • With a First Class Anytime Return, outward travel is valid for five days from the date shown on your outward ticket, and return travel must be made within one month from the date on your outward ticket.
  • With a First Class Anytime Day, outward and return travel must be made on the date shown on the ticket.
  • On board upgrade is valid for that service only.

Wheelchair access

Our First Class areas don't have wheelchair accommodation or wheelchair access to accessible toilets. To travel in First Class, wheelchair users would need to be able to transfer to a seat.

Seat reservations

You don't need to reserve a seat, but reservations are available on some longer distance services.

Railcards discounts

Standard Railcard discounts apply when purchasing a First Class ticket for Senior and Disabled Persons Railcard holders. Railcard discounts do not apply if upgrading on board.

Child Discounts

There are no child discounts.

Refunds

Refunds are not available.

Changes to your travel plans

Travel plans cannot be changed.

Breaking your journey

You may start, break and resume, or end your journey at any intermediate station along the route of travel.
