ScotRail announces extra support on Mental Health Awareness Week

Last updated: Monday, 13 May 2024

ScotRail’s commitment to supporting good mental health across the business has been further enhanced with more than 100 staff now trained as Mental Health First Aiders.

Trained and qualified in supporting colleagues, or an individual who may be experiencing early signs of mental ill health, Mental Health First Aiders are coached to signpost and have conversations that can offer support and guidance.

With help from Glasgow-based Grow Training, ScotRail now have the specialist roles in all areas of the business from drivers, conductors and engineers, to staff working in train presentation and station staff.

Since the start of this year, a further 30 staff members have completed training, bringing the total to more than 100 across the ScotRail network.

The announcement comes during Mental Health Awareness Week (13 - 19 May), described as the biggest opportunity for the whole of the country to come together and focus on getting good mental health. Supported by the Mental Health Foundation, the initiative aims to tackle stigma and help people understand and prioritise mental health.

ScotRail’s support for good mental health has also been strengthened through recent initiatives in partnership with Samaritans, such as Time to Talk and Brew Monday.

ScotRail continues to work closely with Samaritans, who offer training and support for staff to deal with recognising the signs of mental ill health and suicide prevention.

Louise McKee, ScotRail Wellbeing Advisor, said:

“The wellbeing and mental health of our staff and customers is really important to us at ScotRail, so it’s great to see many of our colleagues step up to become Mental Health First Aiders across the business.

“Having so many trained staff is really encouraging, and it will enable more of us to identify, understand and help someone who may be experiencing a mental health issue.

“We will continue to identify opportunities to improve the support we provide, and will be engaging with staff throughout this important week to raise awareness of what ScotRail is providing.”
