After 11 days of sport, 53 Team Scotland medals and 1.4 million miles of rail journeys, the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games are now over. The President of the Commonwealth Games Federation, Prince Tunku Imran, has said they were the "best Games ever" and we agree! It’s been a fantastic celebration of sport, Glasgow and the Scottish people and we're proud that ScotRail was an Official Supporter.
The entire ScotRail team would like to say a huge thank you to all customers for your tremendous support, goodwill and patience during the Games, which were the busiest 11 days in the history of Scotland’s railways. Without this, we would not have been able to deliver over 1.1 million passenger journeys to 13 Games venues, the biggest public transport operation Scotland has ever seen.
Check out some of the astonishing figures:
We used every carriage we have and hired extra trains. The sheer volume of extra customers meant that queuing and standing was inevitable at the busiest times, but the overwhelmingly positive reaction from customers and your unfailing good humour throughout made things a whole lot easier.
While we tried wherever possible to minimise the impact on services elsewhere in Scotland, we appreciate some of our regular customers on non-Games routes saw a knock-on effect and we’re really grateful for your support and understanding in helping us deliver a fantastic Commonwealth Games for Scotland.
Right across the country, we’ve pulled out all the stops to reposition trains and staff to ensure the normal timetable returns from the beginning of this week – as well as extra services and longer trains for the Edinburgh festivals
So, as we briefly pause for breath after a record-breaking fortnight, we just wanted to say thanks to all our customers – you were brilliant.
