This talk explores the life and work of Phyllis Mary Bone (1894-1972) whose sculpture is to be found on many Edinburgh public buildings. Trained in Edinburgh and Paris, she also exhibited fine freestanding pieces cast by local foundries. Her artist friends included Adam Bruce Thomson, and in 1944 she became the first woman to be elected a Royal Scottish Academician. This talk by art historian Elizabeth Cumming focuses on work modelled in Edinburgh before the sculptor’s move to Kirkcudbright in 1949.
Elizabeth Cumming is an Honorary Professor in the History of Art at Edinburgh University and a former curator of the City Art Centre.
