Luggage and pets
Carry up to three pieces of luggage, plus two dogs or other domestic animals.
Luggage allowance on the train
You can carry up to three pieces of personal luggage for free. That’s two large items – a suitcase or rucksack, for example – plus one item of hand luggage.
Prams, wheelchairs, bikes and other large items
You can bring prams and carrycots on board too – just look for the carriage with the most space.
There are designated spaces for wheelchair users on most of our trains – including battery operated models where the wheels are no larger than those on self-propelled wheelchairs. Need assistance? Find out more on our accessible travel pages
For information about bringing bikes on board, have a look at our cycling pages
And if you’re carrying anything else, it mustn’t be more than a metre long in any dimension.
Domestic pets are welcome on the train: you can bring up to two with you. That includes the dog, the cat, or the tortoise – but they must be on a lead or in a travel cage.
More luggage than the free allowance?
There’s a charge of half the adult fare for your ticket per extra item – up to a maximum of £5 single, £10 return. There are no discounts for Railcard or Season Ticket holders.
This applies for each additional item of luggage, dog, cat or other small animal over the free allowance, and each article exceeding one metre in any dimension.
Left luggage lockers at the station
Several of our stations have left luggage lockers you can use. If you need help using them, a member of staff will be happy to assist you.
