Discounted tickets are now only available using a Young Scot National Entitlement Card (Young Scot NEC) with the latest smart chip. The easiest way to tell if your card has the new chip is to look for a pink strip under the date of birth. If you don’t see a pink strip visit Young Scot's card webpage for information on how to get a new Young Scot NEC. You can also update your photo at the same time.
Your Young Scot NEC doubles up as a ScotRail Smartcard. Simply load your tickets onto it at a booking office, tap through the barriers and you’re good to go.

What does a Young Scot National Entitlement Card do?
A Young Scot National Entitlement Card allows 16, 17 and 18-year-olds (and full time volunteers aged up to 25) to access 1/3 off most rail fares, as well as 50% off weekly and monthly season tickets. Alongside this, it provides access to free bus travel for Under 22’s and discounted ferry travel for 16, 17 and 18 year olds, and full-time volunteers, proof of age and many more benefits to discover.

You can get 1/3 off most rail fares including Anytime Day Return or Singles, Off-Peak Day Return and Super Off-Peak tickets. If you buy a monthly or weekly ticket you can get 50% off.
How do I get a Young Scot National Entitlement Card?
To get your Young Scot National Entitlement Card, simply apply online.The process is straightforward and quick, and you will just need a passport-style photograph and proof of ID, which could be in the form of a provisional driver's licence, passport, a Yoti account or other identification options.
You can also apply for your Young Scot National Entitlement Card via your school.
How long does it take for a Young Scot National Entitlement Card to arrive?

How do I use my Young Scot National Entitlement Card to get rail discounts?
To use your Young Scot National Entitlement Card to get discounts on train travel, simply present your card when purchasing tickets at a ticket office (or on board the train from the conductor where there is no ticket office) to claim the discount. Or you can book online, selecting the Young Scot National Entitlement Card option in the Railcards field. You must have your card with you when you travel, otherwise you will be charged the full fare.
What happens if I don’t have my Young Scot National Entitlement Card with me?
You need to show your card when you buy tickets at the ticket office or at a ticket check. If you don’t have your card when you travel, you will be charged the full fare price.
I am a volunteer - how do I claim the rail discounts?
If you are a full-time volunteer, up to the age of 25 (inclusive), you are entitled to 1/3 off train travel, and a 50% discount on weekly or monthly Season Tickets. To claim rail discounts, you will need to prove your volunteer status to Young Scot, who will issue you with a card which states that you are eligible for the same discounts as 16-18-year-olds.
My card doesn’t have the Pink Strip, can I still use it for discounted train travel?
Unfortunately, if your card doesn’t have the pink strip you won’t be able to upload tickets to it. You can apply for a card with the pink strip at young.scot.
How long is my Young Scot National Entitlement Card valid for?
Anyone from the age of 11 to 26 can apply for a Young Scot National Entitlement Card, however the specific train travel discount is only available to those holding a card who are from aged 16, 17 or 18.
