Connections between trains

Give yourself at least five minutes to connect with another train in our stations.

When you’re changing trains at our stations, please always allow at least five minutes to make the connection to ensure you don’t need to run or rush.

Sometimes you’ll need to change trains at our stations to connect onto another ScotRail service or with another operator to go further afield. Some of our bigger stations get really busy, so please always give yourself at least five minutes, preferably more, to make sure that you can make your connection safely, without having to rush.

At the following large stations, these are our suggestions for the amount of time to give yourself to comfortably make your connection:

  • Carlisle – 8 minutes
  • Edinburgh Waverley or Glasgow Queen Street – 10 minutes
  • Glasgow Central – 15 minutes

Catching the last connection of the day? Leave extra time, just to be safe.

Plan around engineering works and disruption

We do everything we can to minimise disruption – but we can’t always guarantee connections between trains.

It’s always a good idea to check for scheduled engineering works when planning your journey – and keep an eye out for last-minute schedule changes or disruptions on the day. The easiest way to do this is by downloading the ScotRail App. This enables you to plan your journey and receive live service updates when you’re travelling.

Transfers between Glasgow Central and Glasgow Queen Street

It’s about a 15 minute walk between Glasgow Central and Queen Street through the city centre or there’s a free bus link between the two. You just need to show the driver your valid train ticket when you get on board the bus. To be sure of making the connection leave yourself about 30 minutes to get between the two stations.
