Dunfermline Abbey and Palace Ruins

Dunfermline Abbey and Palace Ruins

As the final resting place of some of Scotland's greatest kings and queens, including Malcolm III and Queen Margaret, the great Benedictine abbey of Dunfermline occupies an especially important place in the national consciousness. The royal association ensured that this became one of the wealthiest and grandest monasteries in the world. The abbey was founded in the 11th century by Queen Margaret and the foundations of the original building lie under the stunning 12th century Romanesque style nave. The royal lodgings at the abbey developed into a spectacular palace, which became the birthplace of Charles I. Stunning views of the glen can be gained from the palace.
