More than three and a half million people travel with ScotRail

Last updated: Monday, 14 August 2023

More than 3.5 million customers travelled on ScotRail services in the last two weeks, with the 2023 UCI World Cycling Championships helping to deliver the busiest period since before the pandemic.

Another 469,000 customers travelled over the weekend, meaning just short of one million journeys were made in the last two weekends alone.

The start of the last week (7 August) also saw record numbers travelling, with Monday and Tuesday seeing the highest number of journeys since 2019, with 538,000 journeys in only two days.

During the 10 days of the cycling championships, 647,000 more journeys were made compared to the same period last year, with people taking advantage of the thousands of services ScotRail provides.

As well as the cycling events taking place at multiple venues, the Scottish football season has returned and the Edinburgh Festivals are underway, with extra services and more seats helping people get to and from the capital.

ScotRail has had hundreds of extra staff on hand to assist customers, and the two weeks of travel proved to be a huge success with record numbers of people passing through stations.

Today also marks the launch of ScotRail’s ‘Go by train’ campaign, encouraging people to choose rail when planning days away in Scotland.

A new Inspiration Hub is also live on the ScotRail website, an exciting new online resource with hundreds of ideas for things to do, upcoming events, discounts, and offers all within easy reach of more than 300 train stations across the country.

Alex Hynes, Scotland’s Railway Managing Director, said:

“It is absolutely fantastic to see how many people have travelled on our services, and we are delighted to have played such an important part in a very busy two weeks for the country.

“Travelling by train is an excellent way to experience everything Scotland has to offer, and we hope that the huge numbers of extra customers over the past two weeks continue to choose ScotRail.

“Our new Go by train campaign has also been launched today, and I am sure it will help to spark imaginations and show the fantastic experiences that Scotland’s Railway can make possible.”
