Glasgow Queen Street redevelopment

The transformation of Glasgow Queen Street station will deliver significant improvements for customers.

The £120 million project will provide:

  • A contemporary building both internally and externally
  • An expanded concourse
  • Improved, fully accessible, entrances on Dundas Street and George Square
  • New station facilities including accessible toilets, lost property and ticket office as well as space for retail
  • Extended platforms to accommodate longer trains of up to eight carriages

Customers will notice some changes to the layout of the station concourse and there will be alterations to services as the project moves through its scheduled phases.

What you need to know

This autumn, Platform 4 & 5 at Glasgow Queen Street will be closed while Network Rail engineers extend the tracks, so we can operate longer, greener electric trains.

The platforms will close from Monday 16 September and reopen for the start of service on Monday 14 October.

It’s part of the £120 million project to redevelop and expand Scotland’s third-busiest station. The 26m extensions allow us to operate eight-carriage Class 385 Express trains from the station – meaning more seats for passengers.

During the closure, engineers will lay new track, extend overhead power lines, rebuild platform walls and resurface the platforms.

Most services at the station are unaffected. However, there are alterations to some services on these routes

  • Glasgow Queen Street – Anniesland
  • Glasgow Queen Street – Edinburgh (via Cumbernauld & Falkirk Grahamston).
  • Glasgow Queen Street – Aberdeen/Inverness

Mondays to Saturdays
Our Glasgow Queen Street to Anniesland service will operate hourly between Anniesland and Ashfield only.

Our Glasgow Queen Street to Edinburgh via Cumbernauld service will start and end at Springburn. You’ll be able to change at Springburn for services to/from Glasgow Queen Street Low Level, which are unaffected.

Due to platform restrictions at Glasgow Queen Street, the 09:42 Aberdeen to Glasgow Queen Street service will terminate at Stirling. Our 12:08 Glasgow Queen Street to Inverness will start at Stirling.

Please allow extra time to time to connect in/out of local services. If you have any additional needs, please contact Customer Relations on 0344 811 0141 or speak to station staff or Help Points on our platforms.

Sundays
Our Glasgow Queen Street to Anniesland service will operate hourly between Anniesland and Ashfield only.
