Transport Scotland and the ScotRail Alliance have given away £1 million worth of free off-peak tickets to some of the top destinations in Scotland. Over 80 percent were snapped up within five hours of the launch.

We’ll send you a confirmation email if you've completed a successful online application for free tickets in our £1,000,000 ticket giveaway.

This email is your Off-Peak Day Return ticket voucher.

Your voucher will confirm your day and route of travel, your name, number of tickets claimed (1 or 2) and a unique number.

Simply show this email (printed out or on screen) to ScotRail staff, on train and at the station, when you travel. You’ll also need to show valid photo ID.

Remember, you’ll need to show your ticket voucher email to ScotRail ticket inspectors on both your outbound and return journeys. It’s your responsibility to keep your email printout or ensure you have enough battery life on your device to show the email on screen.

Before your travel date, we’ll send your ticket voucher by email. If you haven’t received the email, first check your spam or junk folder.

If you still can’t find the email, contact our Customer Relations team on 0344 811 0141 who can resend the email to you.

£1,000,000 ticket giveaway: you can choose to use your two free Off-Peak Day Return tickets for either two adults or for one adult and a child aged 5-15. If you choose to use the tickets for adults, remember children aged 5-15 years qualify for a 50% discount on Off-Peak Day Return tickets. Children under 5 years old travel free on ScotRail at all times.

ScotRail's Off-Peak Day Return tickets are valid for travel any time at the weekend, on weekday off-peak trains between 09:15 – 16:40, and after 18:15 Monday to Friday. Outward and return travel must be made on the same day.

No, it’s not possible to change the date or route of travel after you’ve claimed your free tickets in our £1,000,000 ticket giveaway.

Free Off-Peak Day Return tickets are non-changeable, non-refundable and non-transferable. And the named claimant must be one of the people travelling.

Our ticket inspectors, either in stations or on trains, will ask for photographic proof of your identity when you travel with a free ticket voucher.

Examples of suitable ID include a passport, photo driving licence, student card, National Identity Card, National Entitlement Card, Young Scot Card.

If we’re not sure that you look 16 years old, we may ask for proof of age to check you’re eligible to claim and redeem free tickets in our £1,000,000 ticket giveaway.

ScotRail is dedicated to assisting disabled customers and people with reduced mobility. We aim to provide assistance to those who need help when travelling on our network whether this has been booked in advance or not. You are able to book assistance at least three hours in advance for journeys on the ScotRail network.

Strictly limited to one registration per person, and a maximum of two tickets can be obtained per registration. Must travel between 18 September – 30 November 2017. Photographic ID will be required to travel. Registration required.

Claim instructions are deemed to form part of the Terms and Conditions and by participating all claimants will be deemed to have accepted and be bound by the Terms and Conditions. The ScotRail £1 Million Off-Peak Ticket Giveaway ("The Promotion") is open to UK residents, aged 16 and over, excluding employees (or members of their immediate families) of the Promoter and all those professionally associated with the Promotion.

The Promotional Period, during which the free off-peak tickets can be claimed, will begin at 10.00 on 6 September 2017 and run until either £1 million worth of tickets have been claimed or until 23.59 on 15 September 2017 (whichever is the earlier date). Once the Promotional Period has ended, the booking site will be closed.

There are £1 million worth of Free Promotional Tickets available to be claimed within the Promotional Period. The free tickets are valid for Standard Class Off-Peak Day Return travel only. Tickets are valid on ScotRail services only, they are not valid for travel on any other operator.

National Rail Conditions of Travel apply; see nationalrail.co.uk/nrcot for further details. You are strongly advised to read these conditions, which contain limitations and exclusions relating to the Promoter's liability in respect of loss caused by delays or cancellations.

The Free Promotional Tickets can be used to travel on off-peak services only from 18 September to 30 November 2017 (excluding 7 – 22 October 2017).

Off-peak includes travel any time at the weekend, on weekday trains between 09.15 – 16.40, and then any time after 18.15 Monday to Friday. Tickets are valid for travel on the date printed on the travel voucher only. Outward and return travel must be made on the same day.

All ticket bookings are subject to availability on selected ScotRail routes (restrictions apply). The Promoter will determine the allocation of Free Promotional Tickets.

You can claim a maximum of two Free Promotional Tickets subject to availability. To claim Free Promotional Ticket(s), you must complete a one-off registration. You can claim either two Free Promotional Tickets on a selected route/day (for yourself and a companion to travel free), or claim one ticket on up to two separate route/day combinations for yourself. Strictly limited to one registration per person. For the avoidance of doubt only one unique email address per person will be accepted.

Free Promotional Tickets can only be claimed online at thankyou.scotrail.co.uk. Claimants should follow the claim sequence as detailed at the website. Once the registration and day/route stages have been completed, the claimant will then be served a ‘confirmation' page and instantly sent the ticket voucher by email. The voucher carries a unique number and details the claimant’s submitted name and address.

Claimants must bring all ticket voucher(s) to the departure station on the day of the selected journey (printed or on screen). Photographic ID must be shown to successfully validate vouchers when travelling; including (but not limited to) the following: passport, photo driving licence, student card, National Identity Card, National Entitlement Card, Young Scot Card.

If you cannot show a valid ticket voucher (printed or on screen) for the class of accommodation and service you’re using when travelling, you will have to pay the appropriate fare. You must retain your ticket voucher(s) throughout the outbound and return journey – it is the only proof of your ‘free' travel eligibility. It’s your responsibility to ensure you have enough battery life on your device to show the ticket voucher on screen on both your outbound and return journeys.

No purchase is necessary.

Ticket vouchers are personal to the individual claimant. They cannot be transferred to any other person, nor can they be traded in any way. Ticket vouchers are non-changeable, non-refundable and cannot be redeemed for cash. In the interests of fairness, any individual breaching this term will have any associated claims/tickets cancelled. The Promoter also reserves the right to cancel associated claims within the same household or same family.

Claims cannot be made by third parties, organised groups or by computer macros, and in all instances these claims will not be allowed. No bulk claims. Any individual trying to circumvent the application process by (including but not limited to) multiple names, addresses, email addresses will be banned from participating and any claims will be declared void.

Claimants must travel on the scheduled date, on the booked route. All travel is subject to availability and free ticket vouchers do not include seat reservations on the selected route of travel.

In circumstances out of the Promoter's control, certain rail routes may be subject to disruption or cancellation, in which case ScotRail will provide replacement travel at no additional cost. The Free Promotional Tickets booked through the promotional site will be valid on all replacement travel in such circumstances. However, in any instance of delay, disruption or cancellation, passengers will not be entitled to any Delay Repay compensation.

This offer cannot be used in conjunction with any other discounts or promotional ticket offers.

The Promoter accepts no responsibility for system errors or other technical issues that may result in disruption to online registration or ticket voucher redemption. Proof of online registration does not constitute proof of voucher delivery.

To the fullest extent possible in law, neither the Promoter, nor agencies involved in this Promotion, will be liable for any loss or damage whatsoever caused by matters relating to this Promotion.

If the Promoter reasonably believes that any claim is being made unlawfully or illegally they may reject or cancel any claim and claimants agree that you will have no claim against the Promoter in respect of any rejection or cancellation. The Promoter reserves the right to take any further action it deems appropriate in such instances. The Promoter reserves the right at its sole discretion to eliminate or disqualify any claims or claimants it regards as being in breach of these conditions or the spirit of the Promotion.

The Promoter will not pass personal details on to any other organisation. All reasonable steps will be taken to safeguard claimant's personal details. The information given to the Promoter will be held securely in accordance with Data Protection principles.

Our Season Ticket Thank You offers a free week of travel for annual and monthly Season Tickets holders. If you hold an annual or more than a monthly Season Ticket, that was valid for at least one day in May 2017, you're eligible to claim a free week of travel on your usual Season Ticket route.

If you have a paper Season Ticket you must claim your free week when you renew your eligible ticket. The claim period for Smart Season Ticket holders ended on 30 June 2017.

How to claim

  • Return to the station booking office where you purchased your qualifying Season Ticket to renew it

You can claim a free week of travel if you have an annual or more than a monthly ScotRail Season Ticket that was valid for at least one day in May 2017. Your free week will be added when you renew your qualifying Season Ticket online.

  • Ticket requirements: Enter your journey details and start date as normal
  • Ticket end date: Enter end date if applicable
  • Select ticket: Choose your ticket. Your renewal must also be a monthly Season or longer
  • Delivery: Select 'Paper ticket by post'
  • Photocard: Enter your Photocard number

The claim period for Smart Season Ticket holders ended on 30 June 2017.

You could claim online for a free week of travel on your usual Season Ticket route if you had an annual or monthly ScotRail Season Ticket valid for at least one day in May 2017. The free travel offer included additional travel benefits if your eligible Season Ticket was on a ScotRail Smartcard. The claim period ran from 1 May - 30 June 2017.

If you hold or buy an annual or monthly Season Ticket, valid for at least one day in May, you'll be eligible to claim a free week of travel on your usual Season Ticket route with our Season Ticket Thank You scheme. And there are extra travel benefits if you have a Smart Season Ticket - including weekly Seasons.

Smartcards are normally sent out within ten working days. If you haven’t received your card after this time, contact the Smartcard team on 0344 811 0141 who can check the status of your application. We may need to request a new photograph if your original photo was unsuitable.

In the first instance, ask a member of station staff to validate your Smartcard if possible before you start your journey. Failing this, a conductor on the train can validate your Smartcard.

Contact our Smartcard team on 0344 811 0141 as soon as you realise you’ve mislaid your card. The Smartcard team will cancel it and order a new one. We may charge a card replacement fee.
