900 Voices

The voices of Edinburgh’s communities shape an ever-evolving sound installation inside St Giles’ Cathedral's magnificent interior.

Celebrating St Giles’ Cathedral’s momentous 900th anniversary, 900 Voices is an ever-evolving sound installation created entirely from the diverse voices of Edinburgh’s communities.

Exploring the themes that anchor this year’s International Festival programme, reflections on belonging and community reverberate through St Giles’ Cathedral in 900 Voices. This experimental installation emerged from recorded conversations with people from all walks of life across Edinburgh. Prepare for some deep listening to take in the rhythms and cadences of these conversations.

Neighbouring The Hub (our Festival home) on the Royal Mile, St Giles’ Cathedral has seen nine centuries of Scotland’s turbulent religious history, from the very beginnings of the Wars of the Three Kingdoms to John Knox’s Reformation. Today the cathedral welcomes worshippers and visitors alike to experience the art and history within its walls. Explore its magnificent interior and gorgeous acoustics while absorbing the innate musicality of 900 Voices, as the voices and conversations ebb and flow around you.
