Pierre-Laurent Aimard embraces the intricate and intense music of Arnold Schoenberg and his contemporaries.
Quite simply one of the world’s greatest pianists, Pierre-Laurent Aimard has been a favourite at the International Festival for many years. With his remarkable power and clarity, he brings compelling insights to works from the earliest keyboard music to some of today’s most complex piano creations.
At the start of the 20th century Arnold Schoenberg and his circle of students and colleagues in Vienna looked to redefine music entirely – not only how it was constructed, but also what it could mean. The result is some of the most intense and intimate music ever written, but also some of the most influential.
Aimard performs a collection of pieces from Schoenberg and other composers who followed his ideas, from the intense micro-dramas of Schoenberg’s Six Little Piano Pieces, Op 19, to the immense cumulative power of his Piano Pieces, Op 33a and Op 33b.
