Frequently asked questions

Season Tickets can be bought and renewed online, with the ScotRail app, via a ticket vending machine, or at a ticket office. If you have one of our free Smartcards, you can simply load your ticket to it every time you buy one. You will need to supply a photo, which can be taken with your smartphone, should you wish to obtain a new Smartcard.

We offer Paper Season Tickets too. These require a photocard, which you can get for free from ScotRail booking offices and travel centres, and a passport-sized photo.

You can buy your Season Ticket in advance or on your first day of travel. Online purchases must be made at least four hours before you travel.

  • At any ScotRail ticket office
  • When a ticket office isn't available, it can be purchased on the train

Please note: Kids for a Quid doesn't have to be purchased at the same time as an adult ticket. If you have purchased your ticket online or from a ticket vending machine, you can still add Kids for a Quid at a ScotRail ticket office. Only when a ticket office isn't available can the Kids for a Quid ticket be purchased on the train.
