  • Up to four children aged 5-15 can travel for £1 each with every adult when you buy a Kids for a Quid ticket

  • Picking up or dropping off the kids? You can still travel with a Kids for a Quid ticket, without kids in tow

Which routes can I travel on?
Kids for a Quid tickets are available for Standard Class travel on all routes in Scotland, EXCEPT Lockerbie to Glasgow services.

They're valid on all operators' services EXCEPT CrossCountry.

Do I need to make a reservation?
You don't need to, but you can reserve a seat on longer distance journeys.

Can I upgrade to First Class?
No. First Class upgrades and Weekend First supplements are not available.

Can I get a refund?
No. Refunds are not available with this ticket type.

Can I make a change to my travel plans?
Changes to travel plans are not available with a Kids for a Quid ticket.

Can I break my journey?
Only to make a connection.

Single and Day Returns are only valid for travel on the date on your ticket. For Open Returns you must ensure that your outward journey is taken within 5 days, and your return journey within a month, of the date shown on the ticket.

Not every service will offer Off-Peak tickets and some restrictions may apply during evening peak times. Off-Peak tickets are only valid for travel after 9:15am.

Off-Peak tickets are not valid for travel to certain destinations on services from Glasgow Central, Glasgow Queen Street, Edinburgh Waverley, or Haymarket, that depart after 16.42 and before 18.11.

The following services are also exempt from Off-Peak ticket fares:

  • 18.15 Edinburgh (18.21 Haymarket) to Glasgow Queen Street
  • 18.15 Glasgow Queen Street to Edinburgh
  • 18.30 Edinburgh (18.34 Haymarket) to Aberdeen
Between 2 October 2023 and 31 March 2024, Off-Peak Single and Return tickets are valid for travel all day, any day. Click here to find out more about this six-month ‘Off-Peak fares all day long’ trial.

For Single and Day Returns, you must travel on the date shown on your ticket. For Open Returns, return journeys must be made within a month of this date.

Yes, where a ticket is eligible for a Railcard discount, it can be applied to your mTicket. If you use a railcard, don’t forget to take it with you when you travel or you will need to buy a new ticket.

Yes. There are no restrictions to Off-Peak tickets on Saturdays and Sundays.

Yes. Flexipass tickets are exclusive to Smartcards. You apply for a free Smartcard on the ScotRail website. Flexipass tickets do not require you to supply a photo.

You can get between 10% and 30% off when you travel with a group of ten people or more. No designated drivers, no convoys and missed turnings – ditching the cars and taking the train means you can sit back and relax with friends and family.

When can I travel?

  • You can travel anytime at the weekend and on off-peak trains Monday to Friday
  • Off-peak generally means after 9.15am with some additional restrictions in the evening peak
  • Check dates before travelling as certain peak days might be not valid
  • Outward and return travel must be made on the same day

Is the ticket subject to availability?
No, but we do reserve the right to remove the option for GroupSave tickets during times of expected high demand such as large events.

Do I need to make a reservation?

Do railcard discounts apply?
No.

Do child discounts apply?
No, but children aged 5-15 are classed as one person and under 5s travel free.

Can I upgrade to First Class?
No, not with GroupSave.

Can I get a refund?
Yes, there’s a £10 administration fee for unused tickets up to 28 days after the expiry of ticket.

Can I make a change to my travel plans?
Yes, you can change your travel plans before the outward journey for a £10 administration fee.

Can I break my journey?
No, you can't break your journey unless it's for connectional purposes.

Season Tickets can be bought and renewed online, with the ScotRail app, via a ticket vending machine, or at a ticket office. If you have one of our free Smartcards, you can simply load your ticket to it every time you buy one. You will need to supply a photo, which can be taken with your smartphone, should you wish to obtain a new Smartcard.

We offer Paper Season Tickets too. These require a photocard, which you can get for free from ScotRail booking offices and travel centres, and a passport-sized photo.

You can buy your Season Ticket in advance or on your first day of travel. Online purchases must be made at least four hours before you travel.

On the new version of the app, the Help Point button has been replaced by a main menu icon in the top left of the header bar. From the menu:

  • My ScotRail: access all the features of your My ScotRail account, including ordering a Smartcard
  • Network map: get an overview of any disruption on the network then zoom in for detailed information, from specific disruptions to station facilities and live departures
  • Assisted travel: book assistance for your journey
  • Delay Repay: claim compensation for a delay of 30 mins or more
  • Bike&Go: hire a bike from 11 ScotRail stations
  • Cab&Go: book a taxi to/from 40 stations in the ScotRail network
  • Traveline: get travel information for all public transport
  • My alerts: sign up for alerts on your regular journeys
  • FAQs: view these FAQs from within the app
  • Call for information: tap to call ScotRail Customer Relations
