Decarbonisation

Our vision is to operate the UK’s most sustainable low-carbon railway.

The Scottish Government set out plans to decarbonise all passenger rail services in Scotland by 2035 and we fully support these plans. Rail is already the most sustainable mode of public transport with it contributing just 1% to Scotland’s overall transport emissions. But there is still plenty of work to be done to ensure that the targets are met. We are excited to work towards these targets which we know will benefit everyone in Scotland.

Traction energy – the energy used to power trains – is the single biggest source of our carbon emissions. In July 2020, the Scottish Government published the Rail Services Decarbonisation Action Plan which sets out ambitious plans to electrify more of the rail network and transition from diesel to zero emission trains on the routes that aren’t viable or suitable to electrify.

We are committed to meeting the Scottish Government’s plans for Decarbonisation and have put our own Decarbonisation Policy in place.
