ScotRail support Glasgow Women’s Library on International Women’s Day

Last updated: Friday, 8 March 2024

To mark International Women’s Day, ScotRail staff have donated the children’s book My Mummy is a Train Driver to Glasgow Women’s Library.

Aimed at tackling stereotypes in the rail industry, My Mummy is a Train Driver is part of a series of children’s books promoting diversity and inclusion.

ScotRail contributed to the publication of this book, and has been working with schools and other groups to continue challenging gender stereotyping around career choices and opportunities.

Each copy of the book will also now include a message from a female ScotRail colleague, to celebrate their achievements and contributions to ScotRail, as well as encouraging more girls and women to consider a career in the rail industry.

Glasgow Women’s Library, who have also adopted Bridgeton station, is the only Accredited Museum in the UK dedicated to women’s lives, histories and achievements, with a lending library, archive collections and innovative programmes of public events and learning opportunities.

Pamela White, ScotRail Senior Operations Delivery Manager (North Clyde), said:

"I was delighted to attend Glasgow Women’s Library this week to donate the book My Mummy is a Train Driver.

“We’ve been working hard in ScotRail to increase diversity across the business.

“We know we have work to do to encourage more women into ScotRail, particularly in the driver role, but it is a positive that since 2021, we have seen a year-on-year increase in female drivers.

“That is why opportunities like this are important."

Naomi Brown, Glasgow Women’s Library Digital and Marketing Officer, said:

“Glasgow Women’s Library is a unique resource in Scotland, and houses an amazing collection of materials by, for and about women. Our vision is a world in which every woman can fulfil her potential, and where women's contributions to society are fully recognised, valued, and celebrated.

“We have no budget for materials and our collections have grown over the years through the sheer generosity of our library users, learners and supporters.

“We’re so grateful to all of our donors, and delighted to add this beautiful children's book to our collection, thanks to this kind donation from ScotRail.

“My Mummy is a Train Driver celebrates women train drivers and encourages girls to consider a career in what is traditionally seen as a male profession.

“We hope that borrowing and reading this book will encourage children of all genders to consider roles in sectors stereotypically deemed gender specific.”
