More services and extra carriages in the run up to Christmas

Last updated: Friday, 1 December 2023

ScotRail is adding more services and extra carriages in the run up to Christmas, allowing customers to take full advantage of the festive period.

The train operator has confirmed it will operate additional late-night weekend services on key routes to support the night-time economy, as well as adding extra carriages to trains across the country throughout the week, right up until Christmas.

Customers are encouraged to check their journey in advance, as ScotRail’s timetable will change on Sunday, 10 December.

Services are expected to be busy, so customers are advised to plan ahead, and buy their ticket before they board, taking advantage of the train operator’s off-peak all day fares trial.

ScotRail has also released information on services over Christmas and New Year.

Customers are reminded that the last trains of the day will depart earlier than normal on both Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, with services winding down from around 7pm. There will also be changes to train times over the Christmas and New Year period.

Traditionally services on Boxing Day have been restricted to a very small number, mainly in the Strathclyde area. This year, trains will also run to and from Perth, Dunblane, and Glenrothes, and between Bathgate and Edinburgh, giving more people the chance to travel to see family and friends at this special time of year.

The additional Boxing Day services include:

  • Bathgate to Edinburgh Waverley.
  • Glasgow Queen Street to Alloa.
  • Edinburgh Waverley to Dunblane.
  • Edinburgh Waverley to Glenrothes with Thornton via Dunfermline.
  • Edinburgh Waverley to Perth via Kirkcaldy.

Details of the last trains on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, as well as the timetable during the Christmas and New Year period can be found on the ScotRail website.

Phil Campbell, ScotRail Customer Operations Director, said:

“We know how important this time of year is for people, and we are delighted to be able to provide more carriages and extra services right through the Christmas period.

“Whether it’s shopping trips or nights out, customers can travel for less this Christmas with off-peak fares all day, every day.

“We’re encouraging everyone to plan ahead and check their journey on ScotRail app or website before they set off as there may be minor changes to some train times. This includes the last trains on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day departing earlier than usual.”
