ScotRail announces extra services for The Open at Carnoustie

Last updated: Thursday, 5 July 2018

ScotRail is adding extra carriages and more services to help golf fans from across the world attend the 147th Open Championship at Carnoustie.

With golfing heavyweights, including reigning champion Jordan Spieth, and former Open winners Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, attending, hundreds of thousands of spectators are expected to head for the Angus town.

The Championship will run from Sunday, 15 July until Sunday, 22 July – including three practice days, and four days of the tournament itself.

Carnoustie Links is little more than a five-minute walk from Carnoustie station, making it the ideal option to get to the course.

To help get fans to and from the golf, ScotRail will be making a number of changes to services.

From Wednesday, 18 July:

  • Extra carriages will be added to services calling at Carnoustie.

From Thursday, 19 July:

  • All ScotRail services passing through Carnoustie will call there throughout the day.
  • There will be additional services to Carnoustie. These are outlined below.

As with all major events, services will be much busier than usual. A queueing system will be in place at Carnoustie station and at key stations across Scotland, if needed.

Graham Heald, ScotRail Alliance Head of Customer Experience, said:

“I’m delighted to see The Open return to the fantastic Carnoustie Links, and ScotRail is excited to be part of such a global event. With a spectacle like this on our doorstep, services will be very busy.

“To help things go smoothly, we’re adding extra stops at Carnoustie and more carriages on many of our trains.

“We’re also asking all customers using Carnoustie station to take a few moments to buy tickets and plan their journeys in advance, as this will make their journey easier on the day.”

Johnnie Cole-Hamilton, Executive Director – Championships at The R&A, said:

“We are looking forward to a wonderful week of outstanding golf at The 147th Open at Carnoustie as the world’s best golfers compete for the famous Claret Jug.

“The course is easily accessible by rail from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, and Aberdeen, with the station only a few minutes’ walk away from the entrance.

“Many thousands of fans will travel by train and we will be working hard to ensure they have a memorable and hugely enjoyable time at golf’s original championship.”

Top five tips for golf fans

  1. Buy your ticket before you board. You’ll need a valid ticket for travel, and ticket checks may be in place.
  2. Check your train times. Remember to leave time to catch any connecting services that you need.
  3. Listen up! We’ll have extra staff on the ground to help things go smoothly. To help them help you, please listen to their instructions.
  4. Download the ScotRail app. You can use it to buy tickets, check train times, and see live service information.
  5. Don’t leave it too late. Services will be busy, and there may be times where you are not able to board your first choice of train.

Notes to editors

Journey times on many services will be extended slightly to accommodate the additional stop at Carnoustie.
